Celestial Coordinates

Every star has an address, and the grid it is written on is just Earth's own, inflated until it hits the sky. Earth's axis pierces the sphere at the north celestial pole — declination +90° — and Polaris sits at +89.26°, three quarters of a degree short. The readout gives you its altitude, which is your latitude, because the two grids are the same grid.

Declination is latitude: degrees north or south of the celestial equator, +90 at the pole, 0 at the equator, −90 at the other pole. Three in one view: Capella at +46.0°, high in the north; Mintaka at −0.3°, on the equator itself; Sirius at −16.7°, low in the south. The highest a star can ever get is 90° minus your latitude, plus its declination — which is why Sirius stays low in the south from the northern hemisphere, no matter what time of year you try.

The celestial equator is Earth's equator projected outward, and Orion's Belt happens to lie on it. Anything at declination 0 rises due east, sets due west, and spends exactly half its time above the horizon from every latitude on the planet. That is not a rule of thumb — it is geometry, and Mintaka is the demonstration.

Longitude needs a prime meridian; the sky's is the point where the Sun crosses the equator going north each March. Right Ascension 0h is here, marked, with Algenib in the corner of the Great Square as its nearest bright signpost. It is still called the First Point of Aries and it has not been in Aries for two thousand years — precession drags it west along the ecliptic at 50.3 arcseconds a year, and it is currently in Pisces, heading for Aquarius. Hamal, Aries' brightest star, is now 30° behind it.

Right Ascension runs eastward around the equator, and it is measured in hours because the sky turns 15° in one. That makes RA a timetable rather than a coordinate: a star's RA is the sidereal time at which it crosses your meridian. Aldebaran is at RA 4h 36m and Procyon at 7h 39m, so Procyon transits almost exactly three hours after Aldebaran — and right now you can see the consequence, with Aldebaran high toward the south and Procyon still climbing out of the east.

A real address, written the way a catalogue writes it. Betelgeuse: RA 05h 55m 10s, Dec +07° 24′ 25″. Hours, minutes and seconds of time for the first; degrees, arcminutes and arcseconds for the second. Two numbers, and any telescope on Earth, any star atlas printed since 1600, and any planetarium app will put you within a whisker of the same star.

Watch the grid, not the stars. Six hours pass; the whole coordinate mesh rotates with the sky as one rigid thing, because it is attached to the stars and not to you. Your horizon and your compass points stay where they are while the addresses sweep past them — which is precisely why the sky needs its own grid, and why "high in the south" is not a location.

One catch worth knowing. Because the equinox point drifts, coordinates go stale: every catalogue states an epoch, and these are J2000.0. Precession shifts a star's equatorial position by up to 50 arcseconds a year, so twenty-six years on, the real 2026 sky is about 22 arcminutes — two thirds of a Moon-width — from the numbers on this page. Invisible to the eye, fatal to a narrow-field camera, and the reason the epoch is always printed next to the coordinates.
