Hōkūleʻa, the star of gladness, is Arcturus. At declination +19° it passes straight over Hawaiʻi Island: run two hours and watch its altitude climb almost to the zenith. Sailing north from Tahiti, a canoe knows it has reached Hawaiʻi's latitude when Hōkūleʻa crosses overhead — then turns and runs along that line to land.

Sail north from Tahiti and plot how high Hōkūleʻa climbs: a degree more for every degree you sail, overhead at 19°N — Hawaiʻi Island. Steer until it stands at the zenith. Sirius does the same for Tahiti.

Hōkūpaʻa, the fixed star, is Polaris — and from Honolulu it hangs just 21° above the northern sea, because its height is your latitude. Sail south and it sinks a degree every 111 km until, at the equator, it is gone. A Pacific navigator cannot lean on it as a European sailor could; the southern sky needs its own instruments.

Hānaiakamalama, the Southern Cross, stands upright on the southern horizon once a night. Its length, Gacrux to Acrux, is the ruler. Read Acrux's height off the sea: at Hawaiʻi's latitude the Cross stands one Cross-length above the water. Sail south and the gap grows; sail north and the Cross drowns.

Three hours on, the Scorpion's tail is climbing: run an hour to watch it rise. To Hawaiians it is Manaiakalani, the fishhook of the demigod Māui. He hooked the sea floor and told his brothers not to look back. One did: the line broke, and the land came up in pieces — the islands. The IAU now names two of its stars from the Pacific: Paikauhale, Hawaiian, and Pipirima, Tahitian.

Face east: the instrument that replaces a compass is memory. The Hawaiian star compass splits the horizon into 32 houses of 11.25°, and a star rises out of the same house every night of the year. Run two hours and watch each one come up at its own fixed point. A navigator knows some two hundred, steering by whichever is low ahead and handing over to the next as it climbs.

None of this was written down, and it nearly did not survive. In 1976 the Hawaiians had to find a navigator in Micronesia: Mau Piailug of Satawal. He sailed the canoe Hōkūleʻa 4,000 km to Tahiti with no instruments, then taught Nainoa Thompson, who navigated her home in 1980. The proof that Polynesians settled the Pacific on purpose was a voyage, not an argument.
